I usually place one set of fingers over the other, as if I was about to have
someone place something in the palms of my hands. I then rest the iPhone on
my fingers and the lower corners in my palms. I hope this explanation makes
sense. My thumbs can now reach the lower half of the iPhone's screen. It
does take some getting used to.

You want to make sure you're not covering up the speaker, assuming you're
not using headphones. This position isn't always practical in my opinion,
which is why I'll sometimes still just grasp it with one hand and use the
other for typing and navigating. If I'll be holding the iPhone like this a
lot, this is when I'll temporarily switch back to split tapping to type. I
find that when I use one hand, I don't want to take my finger off of the
screen before looking for the next character. 
I don't have this problem with my thumbs, since over time, I've gotten good
at having each thumb land on the next letter I want to type.
