It's also something an individual who has issues with touch typing on the screen and who knows the print alphabet may find useful. Turn the rotor to hand writing when in a text field, and then begin writing the text using 1 finger. Note that all VoiceOver gestures are disabled other than the rotor option (turning clockwise or counterclockwise with 2 fingers at a diagonal on the touch screen) when hand writing is enabled. When in hand writing mode, to produce a space, swipe right with 2 fingers on the touch screen, to produce a new line, swipe right with 3 fingers, and to delete a character, swipe left with 2 fingers. You can also write in upper case, add punctuation, and add numbers. Cycle through these settings by swiping up with 3 fingers while in this mode. When on the Home screen and Hand Writing mode is activated, writing letters will start generating a list of apps wh
ich have the same title as what you?re writing. When done using the hand writing feature, turn the rotor to a different setting and all gestures will function as expected.

It should be in the roter. If not, you may have to go into Settings ->
General -> Accessibility -> voice Over On -> Roter and select it to be
included in the roter. Note that it's not in the typing items with
standard and touch, but rather it's a root level option in the roter.
Just keep twisting until you find it.

When on the Home screen and Hand Writing mode is activated, writing letters will start generating a list of apps w
 hich have
the same title as what you?re writing. When done using the hand writing feature, turn the rotor to a different setting and all gestures will function as expected.

Or on the unlock screen instead of touching the numbers to unlock you device, toggle handwriting on and you can write in the numbers with your finger. There is a podcast on applevis.com done by David Woodbridge that talks about other places to use the handwriting feature.

I use the second generation kendle sometimes, it has a built in speech
ingin. It is good enough to navagate basic menues, play my audible books and
even read text, but it is very ancient sounding when it comes to listening
to a book with the screen reader, I have done it though.
You may want to do a google to make sure it was the second gen for sure, you
could probably find one for $20 to $40 on Ebay.

Did you find it Dove? I found it yester day in the rotery settings and had
to activate it. Don't know if I love it or hate it yet, it is definetly a
intresting feature. If I get a handle on it, I will be texting more and
maybe even FaceBooking with the little thing.
Thanks for explaining guys.

Kindle Fire HDX 7' Tablet to have built in accessibility features

Sep 26, 2013 in Technology

Chicago - Amazon has provided minimal accessibility in the development of their previous Kindle devices. For the first time a Kindle device will have built in accessibility for a number of disabilities
The All-new Kindle Fire HDX 7" tablet will have built in accessibility features for the visually impaired, hearing impaired, and the mobility impaired as soon as users obtain the device.
In the past Amazon has incorporated minimal accessibility solutions that weren't full access solutions to the many disabled consumers that used the device but this new kindle Fire will incorporate settings and software to make the seven inch tablet fully accessible out of the box.
According to Amazon?s accessibility page for the device here are a number of new features to make the device accessible for people with disabilities. Some of the highlights include: a built-in screen reader from Ivona Text to Speech for blind users, a screen magnifier with high contrast options for low vision users, closed captioning and stereo to mono for hearing impaired users, and Bluetooth keyboard navigation for users that would have trouble using gestures on the screen.
This new Kindle fire will also have accessible user guides that detail how to use the accessibility tools on the Kindle Fire in an on-device Accessibility User Guide. The guide will provide helpful instructions and tips for using accessibility tools with the different features on your Kindle Fire.
The new version of their 7-inch tablet will not be available until October 18, but you can pre-order it today for the current price of $409.00

Thanks Jim. The Kindle Fire is the one I was curious about--it's the
special today on QVC.

Or on the unlock screen instead of touching the numbers to unlock you device, toggle handwriting on and you can write in the numbers with your finger. There is a podcast on applevis.com done by David Woodbridge that talks about other places to use the handwriting feature.

To get a comma, I use a tap to get a period and then a two finger swipe
down to change that to a comma. A two finger swipe to the right will
delete a character. I'd use the roter in the normal way to move around
by characters, lines and words and delete and edit what you need to in
mostly the normal way.

Or on the unlock screen instead of touching the numbers to unlock you device, toggle handwriting on and you can write in the numbers with your finger. There is a podcast on applevis.com done by David Woodbridge that talks about other places to use the handwriting feature.

The first day I updated it Voice Over sounded like it had a cold, as if the speaker was muffled, but after the battery died and I recharged it that day it seems to sound normal now. If I could go back I would have just left the last OS, but it may be not a big deal for others, or it may be different on 4s, 5 and 5S, but my phone seems more sluggish now.

Hi list,

I'm seeking a blind friendly digital recorder. Olympus would be my choice, but I don't have model numbers. I probably don't need the top of the line, but something with speech. Thanks in advance for any help you might provide.

Best wishes,

Rollie Hudson

I would suggest either the DM 420 or the DM 520 from olympus. I have the 520
and most features talk. Not sure how hard they are to find at this point but
I would think doing a littel research should find one out ther.

The dm420 has been discontinued. I think they are still making the 520 and
620. They are all excellent machines.
