I do this quite a bit.  A likely cause of the problem is your cable. The 8th inch socket on your cable, the one that plugs into your iPhone, is probably not long enough, especially if the iPhone is inside a case or skin.

My first suggestion is to try removing your iPhone from any case or skin and try again.

The other possibility is to replace your cable with one that has a longer 8th inch socket.
