Gee! This must be a later model because mine has no locking mechanism
for the pointer.

It was improperly designed. Had proper design been done, you would have
known not to touch the hand until you heard the hand had been locked in
place and was ready to be touched. You then could have hit a button to
unlock the hand after getting your reading.
