Those stands are meant for OCR. This wouldn't solve the problem of
having to reposition the item to find the bar code if you didn't know
where it is on the package. Also, these stands are designed to scan flat
surfaces, like documents or pages in a book.

I've been told about a cardboard stand for your iPhone that allows you
to position the phone over the item you are attempting to scan. This
frees up your hands to manipulate the item. Sorry I cannot remember the
name of it.

Andy said what I would have said. I have had, in my case, the Omni
barcode scanner for many years. Personally, I have tried Digit Eyes and
I would love to use it instead. I am truly unable to efficiently find
bar codes using it.
If I was just getting in to this, I would buy Digit Eyes for $9.00 and
see if I could figure it out with practice. If I learned I could not,
I'd have only spent $9 and I would move on to seek some other solution.
The expensive scanners really do work very well but $1200 is not in
everyone's ready cash so...
Best

Digit Eyes is probably the best because it was designed for use by blind
persons, but the biggest problem that blind people have with bar codes
is finding them. The reason that the $1200 device works better is
because it has an omnidirectional camera that will scan the package
until it finds the code. The iPhone's camera only sees straight ahead,
so it is up to the user to move the phone, the package, or both until
you strike gold.

Looking to see what the concensus of the community is on bar code
reading apps for the iphone.
If I can avoid the $1,200 for an id mate, that would be great.
Tried red laser a few years ago, but never got any joy.
Any information and or experiences would be helpful.
