Hi Peter,

To get into the app switcher, hit home key twice close together. You 
will hear voiceover say app switcher. You have to options on the 
screen. in a vertical layout, meaning up and down, you have the option 
of open the app or close the app. You want to close the app. You must 
do it for each application that is opened.
Once all applications are closed, the option you have left is the home 
button. Double tap that and you are back on the home screen.
