[Electronics-Talk] Electronics-Talk Digest, Vol 141, Issue 17

There are at least 4 audible pedestrian signals in Frostburg, main and
Broadway, new george's creek road and main street main and water street and
the fourth one I can't remember. All the apses in our area were upgrades to
existing ones so their expenses weren't that great. What I usually do is
wait a second after the walk sign says it's ok to walk because even in this
small town, they sometimes run the light so it's always good to make sure
cars aren't coming across your bodyI can remember an incident where one of
the older generation signals masked the sound of a truck backing up and
caused a blind to be hit by a truck. Fortunately she wasn't hurt but just
scared a little bit. I served on a couple of committees when I lived in the
d.c. area and most of the time they weren't needed. One of the
intersections around here has 8 lanes of traffic so in that case it's needed
I'm a little more old school than most people are. The real key is listen
to traffic and make sure noone's coming across the path you're traveling.

They work for a couple of weeks or so, then the bugs come back with a
vengeance. Another thing you may want to know is that we discovered that
whatever outlet the device is plugged into gets roaches and roach crap all
over it. We figured the roaches climb up the cord to get away from the
stuff and come to the outlet. Pam.

Has anyone had success with one of those ultrasonic bug repellers that is
supposed to keep roaches and rodents away by emitting high frequency
ultrasonic sounds that they supposedly can't tolerate?

I have been told by a staff member where I now live that it is necessary
to keep kitchens well lit 24/7 since that discourages bug life in them
to some degree. On his Continent where he was born, some of the roaches
actually hiss.

Since I don't write often to the list, we'd like to say something about
about the keurig coffee brewing system. I have lots of experience in brewing
coffee that goes way back to the '70's when I was in the food business. I
believe I've read all the poasters messages about the keurig coffee brewing
system. A commercial coffee brewing system would be as fast and convenient
as a keurig, however you would be brewing a pot at a time and it will cost
you between $300 to $500 for the equipment, and you may have to have it
professionally installed. This would be a permanent installation, unlike the
keurig which is portable. The taste and quality of the coffee from either
system is about the same. I believe the keurig system would be the one most
people should go with, unless you sit around drinking coffee all day. Then
you may want to go with a conventional coffee system, such as mr. coffee and
other brands that are like a mr. coffee. Of course you could buy those
systems from 1 to 12 cups and up. You have a little more control of the
brewing coffee experience, but I don't think it's substancially better. It
will cost less. The keurig coffee system cost more but there's nothing like
the convenience of a fresh cup of coffee that tastes good. It reminds me of
the '70's, as a matter of fact, it reminds me of working in the food
business in the '70's. Many times in the afternoon, we'd brew up a whole pot
of coffee, and didn't make a sale, and an hour later we would have to pour
the pot of coffee down the drain, so therefore, there's something to be said
for fresh coffee on demand. If any of you aren't getting hot coffee out of
your keurig, there's got to be something wrong with your machine. As Mike
said in the message below mine, that he has to wait a while to be able to
begin to drink his coffee, it's that hot, and that's true here too. To sum
it all up,this is what we have, a commercial brewing system, it's a drip
system but very pricey. We got the same thing in the drip coffee systems non
comercial for your house as mr. coffee, other brands etc, they make good
coffee, and you have the keurig system which is basically a drip system, it
makes good coffee. One coffee system I don't recomend and that's the
perculator. I don't think it makes as good coffee as the drip system
does. When it comes to water temperature, best results will be if the water
is 180 degrees. Any questions ask away.

Looks like this thread is all about bugs instead of about coffee makers that
can be programmed with the iPhone.

The pests don't even notice those repellers other than to make nests on
them.

But what about the majority of blind pedestrians who do not own smart
phones?? How would they benefit from an app that could alert a smart phone
user when it is safe to cross an intersection, even if such an app could
even be developed in the first place?? The traffic signal would still need
an audible alert so that it would benefit all blind pedestrians and not just
those with smart phones in order to comply with the ADA, regardless of the
expense to the municipality.

Hi Jim.
I also live on a quieter street that crosses a very busy one, and I had the
exact problem you describe--figuring out a lull in traffic from when I had
the light.? It's also an offset intersection, with a lot of turning traffic.
As I said, I had to fight hard to get an APS there, but, every time I was
thinking of giving up, I'd misjudge the light, and I'd grit my teeth and go
back to the battle.? I should not have to risk my life, literally, to cross
the street.? Well, no more than anyone else does. To heck with what it cost
the county.? I pay taxes, and my life has value in itself.
I have been wondering for years if it would be practical to develop a smart
phone app that would say when the walk sign was on.? It would have to be
absolutely real-time, and reliable.? But, if it could be done, it ought to
be a lot cheaper than APS's are now. And maybe there's a way to make it work
with any traffic light one encounters.? Do you think such a thing could
work?

Tracy,
I do think that the end point is what you suggest, to have one at every
intersection that has a traffic light. When there is new development, they
should be put in at the get go as you suggest they are. In other cases, I do
think the more complicated intersections should be first; I think that if a
traffic light needs repair or replacement, an accessible signal should take
its place; and finally, someday there will be accessible signals at every
intersection. I did not always think that it needed to be an equality thing
but that is the way I am headed now also. I live on a north south street
that is not very busy. It is a plus intersection though so my street crosses
a very busy street, one of the more busy in that part of the city and one
that crosses the entire city toward its north end. The busy street is not
even all that wide so the intersection is not geometrically complicated. It
does not have an audible signal but might benefit from one. The reason is
that there is often not traffic on my street crossing. There are some gaps
on the busy street but a blind travelers is left guessing, "is there a gap
because the light is favorable?" Perhaps, it is just a traffic lag and one
may need to race across. Having an audible traffic signal would take away
the guess work. Is this the most important intersection in the city for a
signal? Probably not but there would be benefit in having one. I have lived
in that neighborhood for many years and feel safe crossing so I have not
asked for this yet.

Thanks Jim.? I hadn't thought much about what you bring up.? What criteria
do you think they should use?? Put in an accessible signal at the most
complicated intersections, and, when those are covered, move on to less
complicated ones?? Should the goal be to have an accessible signal wherever
there is a crossing signal?? I didn't used to think so, but now I'm starting
to think that I have the same right to know the status of the light as my
sighted neighbors have.
I had to fight tooth and claw to get the first signal in my county.? I had
to get my state assemblywoman involved, and threaten the county with an ADA
lawsuit.? But now, a few years later, they have put in 2 more signals on the
main drag all on their own.? They seem to be putting them where there is new
development--new businesses going in.? I'm not sure what their criteria are,
but I am glad to have them.

I have been reading this thread with some interest. It seems to me that much
of the time, the answer will be like Mike has said here that there is some
certain number in his area and he knows this because he asked for and got
their installation. What I have not noticed in the thread is a reason for
knowing how many there are. This is information a city transportation or
traffic department probably has but I think the number a jurisdiction has
does not matter very much. The trend of installation is more important to
indicate progress in the installation. It still bothers me that many
jurisdictions react as Fort Collins did for Mike, that is that they install
them in areas that blind people frequent or only when a blind person or
enough of us make the request. The result is that in many of the places
these are installed, they do not offer actual assistance to blind travelers
and in places where they would offer that help, they are not installed
because there is not an entity expected to be frequented by people who are
blind or because no requests have been made.? ? I suppose though that if the
trigger for installation is that there has been a request, I am glad Fort
Collins has responded as they have. In many instances, the answer is that
they are expensive so we can't or won't install. To me the right approach is
to have as a part of a long term transportation plan the goal of installing
some number per year. It also strikes me as best to rank intersections based
on criteria so that the really complicated ones receive the devices also.

We have five in my corner of Fort Collins, CO.? I called the city traffic
operations engineer and asked him to install them on all the crossings I
frequent.? I would recommend asking for them in your area if you like them.
Our city ops said they are relatively expensive, so they only install them
when requested.

Our APS's in Teaneck also adjust volume according to ambient noise. At
first, the lowest volume was very high, but the engineer adjusted it, and
now it's good. Also, ours don't make noise during the whole cycle, so don't
really mask traffic noise. The newer APS's are much better than the old
chirping things.

Here in Phoenix, the volume on the APS adjust according to traffic noise.
Which can be a pain sometimes. For if there isn't any traffic, finding that
pole can be a bit tricky.

be nice to know if there are App programmable coffee brewers and other
appliances like the Instapot that can be controlled by a smartphone or other
interface of some kind.

ultrasonic sounds that they supposedly can't tolerate?

I have been told by a staff member where I now live that it is necessary to
keep kitchens well lit 24/7 since that discourages bug life in them to some
degree. On his Continent where he was born, some of the roaches actually
hiss.

I had one a long time ago, 30 years, and it seemed to work for me
some. However, when I got rid of the roaches, I loaned it to friends
in New York City, and they said they saw roaches marching across the
top of the thing.
So, I would be skeptical of such devices overall.

First of all, we have two accessible crosswalks -I forgot one of them.
An accessible crosswalk is a crosswalk that has blinking yellow lights in a
row embedded along each painted line. This way traffic can see bliking
yellow lights, to alert drivers to pedestrians. in order to make it
accessible they have a beeping tone to help you find the button and when
you press it (it?s not really a button it?s an arrow ) and when you press it
it says ?blinking yellow lights are on.?
These are both in areas that only 25 miles an hour.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that you would cross a road based
solely on what your smart phone is telling you, just as plenty of people
have pointed out that an APS just tells you the signal has changed but
doesn't indicate that it's safe to cross or you shouldn't be listening
for traffic sounds. However, that doesn't mean that a blind pedestrian
with a smart phone shouldn't be able to take advantage of yet another
travel aid.

Pam, I would do the same thing you're doing, giving your coffee maker a good
cleaning and it should be just fine. I don't know why anyone wouldn't want
to do that first before getting rid of the machine, at least it would be
good to give a good try as far as giving it a good cleaning. As for the why,
Mary and Peter most likely would feel better and would rather start out in
their new home with a new coffee maker, and to have something new for their
new apartment, having peace of mind that the new coffee maker is completely
clean. Pam, I've noticed in writing and sharing information on the list and
searching for accessible items, Mary and Peter are really into making use of
the accessible apps with the iphone to work different machines, whether it
be some sort of cooking pot, coffee maker, security home systems and other
products, that in some cases wouldn't be very accessible with out the
iphone. Mary, and Peter, it's great that you do make it a priorty to find
items and systems that you can have the option of working with your phones,
after all the accessibility is right there in the app. in some cases it
could be the difference of not using something or because of the iphone, if
that's what makes that thing accessible, that is really a wonderful thing,
and you both don't shy away from that, you make use of what you can do in
having something accessible for you and making full use of your phone to the
ultimate, giving you all kinds of access. Of course not everyone has smart
phones, but if one has one, and through the many apps if one explores all
the access it can give them to do a number of things, including working
something that otherwise might not be accessible, I think it's great. Down
the road a bit, when I have more experience with my phone, I'll probably
want to explore different possibilities as well, knowing me. I'm no where
near that yet, I've got a whole lot to learn, but I'm happy for mary, Peter
and everyone else that are able to do that. I do have a question, and I
don't know if anyone knows about the keurig plus coffee maker. Our friend
has the keurig plus. He was thinking possibly it talked when he was showing
it to us at walmart. Later when he was at home he explored the menues on his
machine and found out it didn't talk. Anyway speaking of apps does anyone
know if there's an app for the keurig plus? We really liked that machine a
whole lot too. Mary, Peter and anyone else looking for a new coffee maker I
hope you all fine exactly what you're looking for. It was something, with
all of the informative information from this thread about the keurig, and
some listers answering some questions for me, when we went to walmart
saturday night, we didn't exactly have in mind to buy the keurig. We were
just going to get a few extra mr. coffee pots which we did get anyway, since
we always want to have an extra pot. Then our friend spotted that same
Keurig that he has, and we told him about this thread on the list about the
keurig and we started looking at them. Pam, I'm quite sure we have the same
Keurig you have from the way you described yours. It's wonderful, while it's
a bit expensive, you can't beat a fresh cup of coffee each time, with coffee
never getting wasted because it got to old. Though everyone has their
prefferences, and from time to time, we'll still use our mr. coffee pot.

Speaking of the temperature of a cup of coffee done in the keurig, it was
165 degrees in a class cup.

Pam, and everyone, keurig does tell you of those exact measurements. I'll
find that part and sent that here to the list. On a 3 button machine which
is what we have, the 3 buttons for the coffee making, going from let to
right, the first button will make 4 ounces,. Note to you coffee coneseurs,
the k cup holds the exact amount of coffee if you make a 4 ounce cup. Again
going from left to right the second button, makes 9 ounces, and the third we
don't remember exactly how much it makes but we'll find out, but it's at
least over 12 ounces. For completeness, the only other buttons are the auto
off button and the power button. This is for the machine we have. We have 4
ounce glass cups that we use, that have no handles. This is perfect if you
are feeling so coffee coneseuric. You would need to buy some little plastic
holders when you use them. If anyone is interested we'll find out more about
where we found the plastic holders. These glass cups we use are free and
we'll find out about the holders. It really is perfect since while you're
drinking it at your leisure it won't get cold for you as with a bigger cup
of coffee.

Mr. Coffee has a pot that is about $20 that can take the K cups or also a
single serving of coffee in a small basket that comes with the unit. I just
bought one and love it. I got it at Walmart.
