Hello,
I don't know if you use an iPad or iPhone, but Voice Dream Reader
supports the EPub format. It is a wonderful app in my experience. It is
quite bad that they do not offer a Windows 10 version.
I have a Victor Reader Stream, and yes, it does support unprotected ePub
format. I don't know if rented textbooks would fall under that category
though. I have not played with ePub files yet on my stream so I don't
know how well it reads them.
