I have the kind of thermometer Gerald suggests--infrared forehead
thermometer with easily replaceable AAA batteries.  The temperature reading
is lower than what you get with an oral thermometer, so I try it
occasionally when I'm well so I know what my usual temperature is.  
As Gerald says, it's much easier to deal with than an oral thermometer.

I would prefer a thermometer for the mouth as those are more accurate than
