[Electronics-Talk] Converting VHS Tapes To DVD

For what it's worth, just an FYI. If you use an all-in-one VCR / DVD Recorder unit to copy VHS tapes to DVD remember it will not work for commercial VHS tapes, it'll only work for home movies. If you try commercial VHS tapes, you'll more than likely get what's called the HBO effect. For those who have never seen HBO effect, back in the good-old-days of VCRs, if you recorded HBO to a VHS tape it would cause waving bars going up and down the TV or whole image fading to black and coming back over and over, or tracking going out and coming back among other symptoms including sometimes audio issues. I believe the industry term is Macrovision. This same effect happens when recording commercial VHS tapes to built-in DVD recorders or to another VCR. normally you need a separate DVD recorder that ignores macrovision.

Depending on how many VHS tapes you have. A VHS to DVD recorder could be a good idea. In my case I saw a deal for a company called legacy box. They converted my 8 mm films to MP4 files. I did about 30 pieces for about $300. Approximately. May be worth it instead of buying a VHS to DVD recorder because they?ll do all the work for you and just mail you a thumb drive. And afterwords you can make as many copies and give it to as many people as you possibly can. I have included a link from QVC below for 18 pieces to be converted for $200. They also have other plans. Personally I think this would be easier than trying to struggle to make your own plus the purchase of the machine. My recommendation would be if you have a description on the tape, placed their sticker on there and then take a picture of it so this way you know which film went to which sticker.

Hi:

I have been thinking for a while about converting some of my VHS tapes to
DVD.I know there are companies out there who do that but I would like to
do it myself if possible.Has anyone on this list done this?If so, what
would be the most accessible way of going about doing it?I am aware there
are RHS to DVD stand-alone units but are they accessible for blind people?

Thanks!

Dennis
