No I did not state that Leslie.

You need a splitter which is a little device that has a means to plug
directly into the modem.  It has two jacks in it.  One is for the phone that
you want to use nearest to the actual wall jack where you plug the second
cord.  The other is for the end of the line that plugs into the other port
of the Splitter.  If you just plug the other one into your modem, it won't
work as I have indicated.

Ok, I am confused. My phone is connected directly to the modem. Then I
connected a phone cable from the jack on the wall into the modem. I tested
it and the phone in my bedroom does not ring. I get touch tones but no dial
tone. What am I doing wrong?
