"Recharge Your Battery"

(Isaiah 58:8) - "Then your light will break forth like the dawn,  and
your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before
you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard."  

This verse is in the middle of what some call the "fasting chapter".  It
tells us some of the benefits that comes from fasting.  There are benefits
to fasting- fasting from food, from television, from other forms of
entertainment, from personal desires and pleasures and spending that time
on things that build up the spirit man instead.  

Jesus said, "When you fast"- not "if" you fast.  Therefore, it has a
place in the Christian life because it is important to our spiritual walk
and growth.  There are various reasons why we fast.  Without doing my
"alms" before you I want to share something about fasting that the Lord
showed me.  

The other day I felt that I should fast.  Usually I will do it if it has
been a while since I have, or if I am going to be ministering somewhere to
help prepare myself, or if there is some need I have, or if I need to hear
from the Lord in a matter.  The other day none of the above was going on,
yet I felt I should.  This is the reason the Lord gave me-- I needed to
"recharge my 'spiritual' battery" before it ran down.  Fasting does
"recharge" us- it gets us more focused on spiritual things and off of
earthly things.  It denies the flesh giving the spirit an opportunity to
build us up.  So sometimes we do it just for the sake of a "spiritual
recharging".

If a battery runs down it causes a lot of problems- it can leave you
stranded, in the cold, in the dark, without communication and so on.  Once
it is "dead" it takes a lot more time and effort to get it recharged so
that it is usable again.  On the other hand, if you keep the battery
charged up- through recharging it regularly- it will always be ready to use
whenever the situation arises or you desire to put it to use.  

The same thing happens to us spiritually.  When we get spiritually run
down, we become weak, powerless, our lights get dim and we are less useful.
 At that point it takes extra time to just get us back to where we were. 
But if we stay "charged" up, not waiting until we have lost our spiritual
"power", we are able to hear the voice of the Lord more clearly, move at a
moments notice taking advantage of the opportunity that is presented to us,
and our lights shine brightly.  

The whole point of what I am saying this morning is that we need to do
whatever we have to do in order to keep our "spiritual batteries"
constantly charged and not let them run down.  That may mean fasting,
getting alone in a quiet place, getting up a little earlier to spend time
in the Lord's presence,  turning off the television and spending that time
in Bible reading.  There are many ways that help recharge our spiritual
batteries and we need to do them while there is still a "charge" left in
them, not after they have completely "died".

Have a great day.  It is a whole lot easier to keep a battery charged up
than it is to let it run down and then have to recharge it.
