Now here's something to crow about folks. I don't know if this young damsel is a Christian or not but, if she is, praise God. If not, maybe one or two of you could introduce Jesus to her. Anyway read and govern yourselves accordingly. Paul

MANDEVILLE—
15-year old, Sophie Trist doesn't read in the same way most of us do. Trist
reads braille. She's been blind since birth.
"Sophie was born without eyes. After some attempts for vision were written
off, her eyes are prosthetic." Her father, Will explained.

The teen is a sophomore at Mandeville High School. She's spending her summer
doing something eye-opening and insightful. Sophie's making braille menus
and selling them to restaurants in Mandeville, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans
for $30 a menu.
St. Marie, Sylvain, Galatoire's, Commander's Palace, Bourbon House, Dickie
Brennan's Palace Cafe, Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse, New Orleans Hamburger &
Seafood, D'angelo's, and Ruffino's are a few of the restaurants who now have
braille menus available.
The teen got the idea while having dinner with her father.
"In a few years I'm going to be living independently. I thought it would be
kind of embarassing to ask someone to do something as basic as read a menu,"
she said.
It's not always an easy task for her to type up such unique cuisine.
"The ones with weird gourmet ingredients. I need to make sure I spell the
names right."
Restaurants e-mail Sophie their menus, she then uses a Perkins Brailler to
transcribe the menus. Her mom then prints out each restaurant logo and her
dad binds the menus.
"We are proud of her. It says a lot about her ambition and her focus," her
father said.
Restauranteur, Dickie Brennan thinks Sophie's idea is visionary.
"For someone her age to want to pioneer something like this is very unique.
It makes you feel good when you can accomodate everyone's needs," Brennan
said.
For now, Sophie doesn't plan to take her menus global.
"I don't think my fingers could handle it," she jokingly said.
The most important thing for her is awareness.
"The best part is making people aware of the blind community and what we
need. It's important to me and others like me that we get the same access."
The American with Disabilites Act doesn't require restaurants to offer
braille menus as long as there is a server or someone there to read the menu
to the customer.
If you're a restaurant and you're interested in having Sophie create braille
menus for your establishment, she can be reached at
