Hi Andrew,
I rarely post to this list, but I felt spiritually compelled to respond to
your email. I will certainly pray for you, and you gain the wisdom on the
kind and place to get additional blind training. Lord, please give Andrew
the tools, resources, and words to effectively communicate with his father
and family. Andrew, if you have not already, I would open a case with your
state vocational rehabilitation. Talk with them what your options are. Most
states have some type of training you can get. From your email, it sounds
like you know what blind people are capable of, so don't like anyone change
your mind. If you are not a part of a blind organization, join one and ask
the for information regarding training and how to speak with your father. If
I may suggest - the NFB is an excellent organization and has helped me
personally. My advice is to get training in an emersion program. Not only
will that get the training you are looking for but also will show your
family you can live on your own. As others have commented there are three
excellent and high quality emersion programs that are directly associated
with the NFB - in Minnesota, Colorado, and Louisiana. Those three centers
have a 6 to 9 month training program, and your vocational rehabilitation
agency should be able to help with the costs of those centers. I am a little
bias being a recent graduate of the Louisiana Center for the Blind (LCB) -
The training I received has strengthened my confidence, improved my blind
skills, and instilled in me that I, as a father of 2 and a husband, I can
live the life I want and do it independently. Get a tour of such emersion
training center with your family, I think it will help greatly. If I may be
bold enough to suggest invite your family to attend a NFB local chapter
meeting, or NFB state convention, or even the NFB National convention in
Orlando, FL this June/July. I pray for this in our lords name.

Subject: [Faith-talk] prayer request decision in my life

Hi all i just need some prayer. I am considering going to either a month
long program or a 2 or 3 month long program that will teach me independent
living skills and stuff. I just get negatism from my dad and things he
basically said i will never be able to live on my own even after this
program that i would need support in house and wouldn't be able to live on
my own. I just feel like i just need to get out from the parents and
things. i been downed by t my dad because of my blindness and things. the
thing is this i keep telling dad blind people can live on their own and
things like that. the thing is this when him and i have these
disagreements we both have clided with each other because he gets me so
upset and things like that just keep me in prayer.
