[Faith-talk] Sharing blindness skills at church

Ericka, that's a good idea. I want to share an experience with this I had
back on November 30, 2014 about this. I am adapting the account here from
my personal journal account from that day. This event occurred in the
context of a Thanksgiving weekend visit to my mother's place.

I live in Daytona Beach, Florida and my mother was living in Palm Coast, a
short distance up the road at the time. That is where the church referenced
here is located. We are both involved with First Christiabn Church in
Daytona Beach now.

Early on this day Mom and I got ready for our day at St. Thomas Episcopal
Church where she was participating as a member. While getting ready we
discussed more issues of the day that were in the news.

We arrived at church for choir practice just before 8 a. m. and the middle
service where she participated began around 9 and ran until just before
10:30. Then we went to the parish hall for snacks and waited for the last
service to end so we could meet the Cub Scout den to whom I made my
presentation.

That program began shortly after noon and I showed my iPhone and lap top
with their speech capabilities and my white cane. I discussed pedestrian
safety and sighted guide technique. I answered a number of questions the
scouts had about things such as how I handle paper money and shopping. A
large portion of the program was taken up with the scouts participating in
sighted guide drills with me. The program ran longer than I expected but it
was good to take the time needed to help them reach their goal of learning
more about people with disabilities. I noted to them how I had been a Cub
Scout at about their age. It wasn't until around 1 p. m. that we finally
left the church.

There's the journal entry as adapted. I will add the Cub Scouts were doing
this program to earn a merit badge regarding people with disabilities.

I hope this will serve as an inspiriation to you and others as we advocate
and educate.

Sunday we were teaching the children in Sunday school about the parable of
the Mustardseed and how you have to believe in things you cannot see. Being
new to the church, I decided that I would talk to my teacher I teach with
Dusty if I could talk about trusting my keen and Blind the skills. It worked
out wonderfully! Unfortunately we have very few children in Sunday school
but I had great questions from kids three years to nine years. I told him to
go and tell their parents and their teachers and Grandparents and anyone
else that it was OK to ask us questions and to not be afraid of us. My
co-teacher sent me some pictures however sharing them here wouldn't be of
much use to most of you. But it really went great. My boyfriend and I are
going to do a meet and greet/question and answer. One Sunday after the
service during coffee time. We tried to get it scheduled during meet the
blind month but it didn't work. Any day is a good day to meet a blind person
in my opinion, so we have it scheduled for November. :-) Will share how it
goes and we're still planning to have it taped on Chad's phone so we can
share it with everybody. It will go on the church website as well. :-)
