Hi David,
While I agree with your sentaments regarding our too busy culture, kids
being involved in too many activities, and our cultural shift, I think we
need to remember the positive stuff. And not all younger people are as ego
centric as you paint them out to be.
But, yes, the church problem of community is a symptom of a larger problem
in American society.
Btw, I'm in my early 30s.
I've not been in a situation to ask for rides to church or anywhere
regularly as I live with my folks.
But, unlike you, I know many disabled people and all have a faith. It seems
to me that disabled people are more
likely to have a faith because faith is a source of strength in a world
filled with discrimination. I wonder too about studies. It seems to me that
disabled people would be more likely to have a faith.
And, I can think of at least three people in our NFB chapter who join a
bible study and obtain volunteer rides. I was surprised in fact given
people's busy schedules. I asked them and they said someone picked them up
to go there.
As we ask for our needs to be met, I think we need to contribute too.
I say this as its all too easy to ask for rides or whatever and ask for
more, and not to give back.
So, if you are fortunate to get volunteer readers or drivers, I suggest you
pay them by giving them a gift card or buying a lunch or coffee, something
to say you appreciate them.
I also think we should volunteer and change the image. If we want society to
change and extend hands to one another, we need to exemplify this change.

Hi Ericka and all,
I have wondered just how many shut ins and people with many disabilities
ever get to walk into a church. I think about this all the time. You see,
the media and many other sources are telling people who have been oppressed
to give up on God, Give up on Religeon, You are at the top of the Ladder.
People are being told that they alone can solve all of their problems. How
sad. With God, we could not breathe. My wife and I talk all of the time
about how society has changed here in the United States all the time. I am
51. When I was 10 years old, I remember people in our neighborhood all
gathered on the porch just talking for hours. Now, the other day, My wife,
Traci, saw a mother and daughter sitting at a table at a restaurant, and
they were both reading stuff on their phones and not talking to each other
at all. We must ask a very tough question. Are we better off with all of
this technology, when it comes to our personal lives, and our faith. Traci
and I cannot even get people to commit to helping us move, for example.
America has lost all sense of community. Mom and Dad had neighbors in our
yard all of the time, when I grew up. Now, most people do not even know
their neighbors. You see, the problem in the church is just a symptom of a
much larger problem. People are out for themselves, not for others. People
are in a hurry all of the time. People try to fit twice as much into their
lives than they use to. Life has become so hectic, that God could pound on
people’s sholder, and they would not even notice. People are so much into
their nice little world in the suburbs. Here in Columbus, People go downtown
to work, and fly back to their home in the suburbs. Columbus, the city part,
to people is just scum, and they just want to get out of the city far away
from this scum. That is the attitude people have in Columbus. The entire
city is being handed to low income people, and the people with money are
just moving farther out. They do not want to live in the city and actually
help those in need. They are moving to the country just to get away from all
of those disgusting people here in the inner city. That is the way people
think here. Well, guess where most churches are now. Most churches are in
the suburbs, where public transportation does not go. Our public
Transportation in Columbus is bad, just to navigate down town LOL! You see
how many problems are coming into the church? People rush to church, and
running out to go to their children’s ball games. This is another thing that
bothers Traci and I. Children are in charge anymore. Children tell their
parents how it is going to be, and the parents obey what their children
want. Parents have their children in so many activities, they do not have
time for Bible study. Traci and I went to this very legalistic rich church.
The idea of a fifth Sunday Bible study was brought up. Just when there are
five Sundays in a month. Traci and I were so angry, because one person had
signed up, and they said We might come, only if our son does not have an
activity at that time. Isn’t that terrible. They were putting their kids
activities over a Bible study! What kind of message is this sending to kids.
I could go on and on. People are turning away from God to do what they want
to do. The States is far from God. It is not looking good. People would
rather go out on black Friday and save a buck than to go to church. It is
all about money instead of church, fellowship, and God. I know many
Christians who are traveling all of the time, and do not spend time with
their own family. I do not like this new world that melinnials are rejoicing
over. I see things getting worse and worse instead of getting better. I love
people, and people are leaving the picture for technology and robots. I have
a love hate relationship with my technology. People sit in church and do
things on their phones. That has gone just oo far. I do not even begin to
know what the answer is for all of this technology taking over people’s
lives. People are way too busy. I want to live a very simple life. People’s
lives are far from being simple. That is why they do not have the time to
pick up a disabled person. Parents don’t even have time for their own
children, because they want to make that almighty dollar and live in a
mansion and on and on. There are many problems and reasons why a disabled
person cannot be picked up for church. There is just no time for people
anymore.

Congratulations Christine!
Debby i think your point about cultural shifts is very true. Sad, but true.
I bet Catholics used to stay all the way through mas. Less people are
staying for coffee hour in other congregations.
Let's stop being defensive here. Nobody is attacking individual faiths.
Nobody is making personal attacks. We are all sharing personal experiences,
nothing more and we are asking for help because posters WANT to be involved.
I pray for all those who don't feel welcome and don't know about this list
or our facebook page. It hurts my heart that blind people are giving up on a
relationship with God and His children. Has there been a study on how many
disabled v. Nondisabled consider themselves religious? How many are active
v. Not active by choice? Curious. I know more disabled that are agnostic or
atheist than those that practice any faith.
Let's share resources instead ok?
Thanks to those who have pisted links, apps & specific suggestions for
specific situations.
If we aren't unified here, how can we expect churches to work with our
divion? Christ and the divison's purpise should unite us, not divide.
