Hi this is Ericka from Wisconsin. Growing up we had several traditions. Right after Thanksgiving here in the states we put up our Christmas tree. That was the day where the whole family was together and we listen to Christmas records, made Karmelkorn made at least one batch of cookies and watched Christmas movies. Christm Christmas Eve we were only allowed to open one package from under the tree. The next day we took turns, the entire family. Youngest to oldest and we could only one open one gift at a time. It may the excitement last. Christmas Eve we always went to church for the candlelight service and it always ended with singing silent night in German as our church was originally founded by German immigrants. Our family still continues the Norwegian traditions of our ancestors. Lots of LEFSE, KRUMKAKE, SOMBUKELS & such. We always had an advent calendar where you open one door a day and the nativity scene always went up. Coming home from church we had supper very simply with a fruit salad, chicken noodle soup for those who did not like oyster stew and LEFSE of course. Cheese and crackers and other Lightfare. Nowadays several family have passed away or moved. Due to the virus we’re not celebrating with family really at all. Christmas Eve my husband and I have a ride set to go to church and Christmas day my parents are coming over to celebrate with us. My sisters have their husbands families where they are going. My grandparents in their mid-90s are not able to celebrate with us for the first time. My grandmother is in a facility for people with Alzheimer’s. My grandpa still lives in their home. It’s going to be a different Christmas but it always in someway will be full of singing, praying decorations and family.
