Nicki,
I have my first one for a little over a year.
It does change your entire life.
Your habits and your relationships with the people in your life.
I would never discourage someone from getting a dog but I would halve them 
learn everything involved.
1.  You must let them go out for necessities several times a day.
No matter if you feel sick or the weather is bad.
2.  When you get your dog, you will find that suddenly everyone you no is a 
dog expert and will tell you everything you must do with your dog.
Never mind that you were educated at the school on proper handling 
procedures.
3.  No more leaving the sox or underwear you are going to ware on the bed 
while you shower.
Dogs seem to think those items are great toys because they have your scent 
and when you have your dog you will find out that you have become the center 
of his universe.
Last observation on my part is to share how having my dog has changed my 
spiritual life.
I would do anything for my dog to feed him and make him happy.
I think I would even die for him.
Having said all that it has reminded me that Christ as assured us that he 
loves us in that manner.
I now try to live my life having faith in my God the way my lovely guide has 
faith in me.
