Subject: Fwd: Notes from today's FEMA Disability Reg IV call-9/9/17 and tomorrow's closed captioning link

Hi Dorothy,

Attached are the notes from yesterday's call with FEMA. Please inform people you know who utilize public transit in the Atlanta metro area of possible service interruptions during Irma.

MARTA’s closing their transportation during high wind events: buses and non-medical transport will stop running in winds that are greater than 40 mph and the trains will stop running in winds that are greater than 60 mph. Information should be shared on MARTA’s website and the local news. Need to get the word out because many people depend on MARTA for transportation. Messaging needs to go out about early dialysis, long term power outages and MARTA emergency closings.

Also, please note, Georgia state Offices will be closed on Monday, and possibly Tuesday.

Thanks and please share this information. Take care and be safe.

Synge

Call Notes:

* George (FEMA): This will be a major rain and power outage event. Need to get messaging out to those on electricity dependent equipment including oxygen dependent to connect with their providers ahead of Monday’s landfall. John (FEMA): Need to stress that those who need medication have at least 72 hours worth with them, there will be lots of power outages due to fallen trees. Also need to stress that everyone should have a plan in place and their transportation secured.

* Stacey/Mike (ADA Office): Issue in Florida with a person with access and functional needs being committed to a healthcare facility against his will. Chief Sue (Dekalb EMA): Florida law enforcement laws(1013) differ from Georgia, Florida has the Baker Act, Georgia doesn’t. Further information indicated that the person was homeless and they were trying to get this population out of harms way. However, any issues associated with this type of response needs to be reported to Mike Galifianakis at the Ga ADA’s office. Lisa (GEMA): Here is GA they have to undergo an evaluation by a doctor to be 1013’d not as easy to do here in Georgia. Betsy (Public Health): there is guidance on this issue in the FNSS Toolkit the Coalition published but not sure how wide spread the knowledge is.

* James (Chatham): Nursing home in Savannah that will reportedly charge families $4000 to evacuate their family members living in the facility. Mike (ADA Office): James please send information to the ADA office so we can assist them with getting the proper assistance/reporting this issue.

* Betsy (Public Health): Would like to speak to Ruth Rust at FODAC re: resources available. Stacey to send Betsy Ruth’s phone number and Betsy will share what she learns with Stacey who will share with the coalition and network. *UPDATE: Betsy spoke to Ruth, FODAC always has wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, canes, shower chairs. Their warehouse is in Tucker. And they will be in tomorrow (Sunday) at 7 AM. Their number is 770-491-9014.

* Chief Sue (DEMA) talked about MARTA’s closing their transportation during high wind events: buses and non-medical transport will stop running in winds> 40 mph and the trains will stop running in winds > 60 mph. Information should be shared on MARTA’s website and the local news. Need to get the word out because many people depend on MARTA for transportation. Messaging needs to go out about early dialysis, long term power outages and MARTA emergency closings.

* Laura (Independent Living Emerg Comm): Issue in Florida, UPS lost a woman’s meds and are not assisting. She needs the meds to breathe. Can’t get meds at local pharmacy because it is a compound. Luckily the police and Fire department are aware of her needs and she will go to the hospital if need be.

* Zan (Portlight): There is an advocate in Dekalb County who is worried about loss of electricity, need power for chair, bed lifts, etc. Betsy (Pub Health): It would be helpful for her to let her local EMA know so they can possibly assist. Paul (Portlight): will connect with her resources, he will also share this information with Chief Sue.

* Crystal (Shepherd) l The Shepherd Center outpatient will be closed Monday and possibly Tuesday so their clients can shelter in place during the storm, they will know Monday if they will close on Tuesday.

* Chief Sue (DEMA): We should all be aware that the local Metro Atlanta evacuee shelters are filling up quickly with people from Florida and South Georgia. The hotels in the area are booked to capacity through Wednesday. Churches and Mosques are stepping in to assist. There could be a real issue with lack of sheltering if North Georgia individuals need sheltering once Irma comes here.

* Stacey (ADA Office): Where should issues with price gouging be reported. Betsy (Pub Health): State Business Affairs office, Governor’s Office. Sue (DEMA): these issues are being tracked because of the state of emergency and it is illegal.

Call closed at 3:38 pm.

Stay safe Georgia,
