Have you always wanted to participate in a parade? Here is your opportunity to fulfill your wish and help the NFB of Maryland change what it means to be blind in the great outdoors!

Following the successful hike of the Maryland section of the Appalachian Trail by Lou Ann Blake and Maurice Peret, the NFB of Maryland has been invited to participate in a parade celebrating the 75th anniversary of the completion of the 2, 180 mile long Appalachian Trail. The parade will take place on Saturday, August 11, 2012, at 12:30 p.m. in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The parade route will be three-quarters of a mile long and will include an uphill portion approximately one-quarter mile in length.

All NFB of Maryland members and their families are encouraged to participate in this fun opportunity to help change what it means to be blind in the great outdoors. We will be walking the entire length of the parade route, carrying signs, and handing out Braille alphabet cards to parade watchers. Those interested in participating in the parade should contact Maurice Peret at mauriceperet at gmail.com<mailto:mauriceperet at gmail.com> or Lou Ann Blake at lblake at nfb.org<mailto:lblake at nfb.org> by Friday, July 27, 2012. Transportation will be provided from the NFB Jernigan Institute and will leave at 8:30 a.m. on August 11th and will leave Harpers Ferry at 3:30 or 4:00 p.m.

Your help is needed to come up with catchy slogans that will be displayed on signs carried by parade participants. We are looking for slogans like "Changing What it Means to be Blind in the Great Outdoors" and "Have You Met a Blind Hiker Today?" Please forward your suggestions to Maurice or Lou Ann by Wednesday, August 1st.

Volunteers are also needed for an NFB information table on Saturday, August 11th, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Sunday, August 12th, from noon to 5:00 p.m. If you are able to help out at the information table, please let Maurice of Lou Ann know by Wednesday, August 8th.

After participating in the parade or helping out at the NFB information table, be sure to check out the other fun activities of the 75th anniversary celebration. These activities will also take place in historic Harpers Ferry and include workshops, hikes, poetry reading and storytelling, music performances, photography exhibits, and children's activities.
