Dear Fellow Federationists:

Many of you will recall that the Maryland Board of Elections voted against implementing a system that would allow blind voters to mark our absentee ballots privately and independently if we cannot or do not choose to go to a polling place. The National Federation of the Blind and some Maryland voters, including our own state president Melissa Riccobono, filed suit asking a federal court to order the Board of Elections to reverse its decision and implement this system in time for the June 24 primary elections. A hearing in which a judge will decide whether or not to grant this request will take place on Wednesday, June 11th, at 10am in Courtroom 5D of the federal courthouse (101 W. Lombard St. in Baltimore.) It is important that we respectfully let the judge hearing the case know that this issue is important to blind voters in Maryland. Please plan to attend this hearing if you can. We need to pack the courtroom.

I will follow up with more details about attending court hearings, but for now suffice it to say that it will be important for you to arrive early and to be appropriately dressed. Wear business attire if you can. It is also important that you obey all instructions issued by court personnel and remain quiet and respectful throughout the hearing.

I hope to see all of you on June 11.

Sincerely:

Chris Danielsen

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.
