All;
Beginning last mid May through June, I participated with six Thursdays of workshops with the seniors achieving independent living (SAIL) Led by our fellow Federationist Alecia Breitswerth and her team.
My experience back at BISM after a decade was wonderful.
Looking forward to resumption of Blind skills rehabilitation training for seniors later this month.
(make that Breitswerth, my apologies Fraulein)
😉🦯

>> Blind Industries and Services of Maryland (BISM) has an uncompromising belief in the capabilities of blind people. Even through adversities like the Covid-19 pandemic, our mission to provide stable job opportunities, innovative independence training programs, and quality products and services remains as important as ever.
>>
>> BISM is, and has been, determined to honor its commitment to our community and workforce. During the Covid-19 pandemic, BISM’s Associates served as “essential employees” and continued to work every day to help our State and federal customers survive the negative impact of the pandemic. When Maryland declared its state of emergency, BISM immediately re-tasked our manufacturing of PPE, hand sanitizers, soaps, and other sanitation chemicals for frontline workers, which included MTA bus drivers, correctional officers, BWI airport staff, and many others. We also modified our sewing departments to make cloth masks, in varying designs and generations, to assist the U.S. military and other federal agencies to meet their demand for these critical face coverings. BISM did all of this without any significant downsizing of staff or reduction in wages.
>>
>> At the same time, BISM’s Independence Training and Rehabilitation Department was constrained by our inability to meet personally with our students or to hold group programs. Nonetheless, utilizing virtual communications and other creative, integrative and accessible technologies, we were still able to help many blind and low vision Marylanders find permanent employment and we maintained part of our free Comprehensive Orientation, Rehabilitation and Empowerment (CORE) program.
>>
>> Troy Lowe has spent the past year and a half transporting our blind and low-vision staff and students through the MTA MobilityLink Program. Through the crisis, his role as an essential worker was vital to our continuing operation. He is grateful that BISM’s staff and student’s need for transportation has given him the opportunity to continue working throughout the pandemic. We are honored to have been able to provide necessary PPE and sanitation solutions so that Troy and other MTA employees could continue delivering the indispensable service that our staff and students rely on.
>>
>> With the distribution of the Covid-19 vaccine, we are pleased to tell you that our Independence Training and Rehabilitation Department is welcoming staff and students back into our buildings and things are beginning to return to normal.
>>
>> Looking to the post pandemic future, BISM is ready to hit the ground running and do everything we can to serve our community. It is my pleasure to introduce myself as BISM’s new Development Specialist, your connection to our organization and its mission. I am here to provide new opportunities for you to join in our mission and to keep you up-to-date as we continue to plan to put that mission into action. If you have any questions, or just want to say hi, contact me at 410-409-0219 or fludwig at bism.org.
