[gui-talk] traffic on the list

Don, I agree. When my schedule was filled I was less apt to respond to
posts but now I have the time to respond and use it a bit too liberally I
suppose.

The big issue is the small group of folks who have a seminal need to reply
to virtually all subjects, regardless of whether they have anything
substantive to add, seemingly needing to see their posts show up on a list.

Allen, without exclusionary devices like certifications or degrees as
requirements to join a list, the more people you attract the lower the
general rate of computer literacy. Lists devoted to the in depth discussion
of teaching, social work, vocational rehabilitation, the law and other geeky
areas of interest maintain higher standards by requesting that list members
be members of the professions mentioned in the group's title. It's rather
obvious the title of this list was designed to scare off the faint of heart.
Graphical User Interface Tech? Over time the list acquired a reputation as
a congenial place to hang out where people were willing to share what
knowledge they had. After that the die was cast. Everyday folks began
joining the list and they brought their friends. For quite awhile
everyone's had a good time. However, now those with busier schedules
looking for stimulating conversation are booged down with the trivial
concerns of those who aren't so focused.
Either the moderator is going to have to start kicking but so the laggards
will leave the list for more congenial confines or those who were among the
initial membership will start a list of their own with a fancy title
designed to be as exclusionary as this one was. "and so it goes"

ALL:

Beating to death this topic too.

The signal to noise ratio on this list is decreasing unfortunately.

The Promotion list is generally good for higher signal to noise ratio.

Ages ago this was supposed to be a geeky area to talk graphical user
interface questions, but it is difficult to separate out the other
aspects of access to and use of electronic and information technology
from one portion of that.

I would certainly think a new list might be formed to cover topics like
market research.

Might I suggest some general ground rules:

1. If responding to a question, read other responses first and don't
duplicate.
2. don't ask questions on the list first unless you've done some real
research first. Doesn't mean we don't want to help, means you should
help yourself before poking the ant hill.
3. If you don't know much about a topic, don't answer a question with
guesses, it isn't helpful.
4. don't answer questions with questions unless you want to bring out
more clarity. Otherwise start your own thread.
5. If an exchange goes beyond three back and forth, its probably past
time to go off-list.
6. Braking my own ground rule but it isn't in effect now--if attempting
to stem the flow of a topic, it might be best to just ignore it. We do
have a moderator who can step in on occasion, but its generally best for
moderators to not use their moderating hammers often, or lists are not
useful. Ahem...

So lets slow down, look before we ask and respond, and take a deep
breath on occasion.

Sigh.
