Albert,

I think a good case can be made that CAPTCHA's do a better job of keeping legitimate users out than SPAM users.  I would guess that CAPTCHA's did a good job 
at first, when they were new.  At this point, internet services see the internet as a really inexpensive way of making products and services available and CAPTCHA's 
are just a low-cost way of buying some degree of protection.  In the long run, though, they will probably have to accept that some kind of monitoring will be 
necessary to truly stop spammers and the like.  All of this is a little unpredictable, though, and too often we are locked out.  However, it makes it difficult to come up 
with solutions since the form of the problem is changing.
