Hi Chris,

To be honest, the first thing I think of in regard to Window updates because
it is the *first* thing that Microsoft emphasizes in order to urge you to
install that service pack or update, is security. You see? Now, I do
understand that each Windows Service Pack has undoubtedly contained other
attributes such as what we're calling bug fixes and nice tweaks, but
security is the very foremost thing MS nearly screams at you in order to get
you off your butt and accept the updates. See? So it's in that spirit that I
kept imagining you and others were talking about a common Jaws update being
mandatory like a Windos Service Pack. See?.

Frankly, as I said, I went ahead and installed it, and it didn't wreak havoc
on my computer in any way. As almost always it doesn't.Although I really
have to say, there've been a couple of updates through the years that
unfortunately disabled some nice Jaws function, such as Reply Directly to
Sender, and I'm not making this up nor covering up that I did something
incorrect in the way I installed the update. No. Everyone knows about this
one. And it took FS another couple of releases and a clot of complaints to
get back the feature. You could tell their corporate face was a little red
(sorry, you know, a little embarrassed) by the way they announced its
resurrection in V. 10, I think it was. They worded the announcement in a
slightly mealy-mouthed way that made it unclear whose fault the disruption
had been. Very political trick of phrasing.

I'm just joking around about that, not crazily angry. They're just doing
public relations. customer relations. Maybe they fooled somebody, maybe not
somebody else.

But anyway, I downloaded and installed the baby, and all is well. And now I
know "hot fix" means a bug fix rather than a new feature added. That's cool.
The more of the lingo you learn, the more clearly you can discuss this
stuff.

All best.

Well, think of JAWS updates as Windows Service Packs. Although JAWS doesn't
update its security, it does improve reliability and responsiveness no
doubt. As a result it is just as important to update JAWS as much as
Windows, even if they're minor. Consequences would include being behind on
new or improved features, particularly accessibility to new or improved
applications (iTunes is one of them in this case), and so on. That's how I
treat updates anyway.
