[GUI-Talk] Question about USBExternal Hard Drive

Debbi,

If I am understanding what you are saying, you had this problem before until your drives were named. If that is the case, did your friend name the USB drives using your computer? I don't see why naming them would cause them to show up, but it might change the order in which they appear. Another thing that I think was suggested when this happened before is to be sure to wait a while after hearing the connect sound before looking for the drive. Particularly the first time you plug it in, sometimes there are additional drivers that are found and loaded. This shouldn't take long, but the availability of the drive isn't always immediate. Also, your virus checker may perform some kind of scan before it lets the drive become visible.

Now for the stupid questions. Have you tried different USB ports? Is there any chance your computer has both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports? That could change which ports work best for the USB drive.

In other words, once the drive has been connected and you hear the sound indicating that a USB device was recognized open My Computer, which should display a list of available drives. Depending on how the list is being displayed you may have to press right arrow to navigate through the list of items so don't panic if pressing down arrow doesn't seem to provide any verbal feedback. When you're in this list of drives can you tell me if the new external USB drive appears in the list? If it does I suspect that the fix lies in the Windows autoplay settings. I believe this is located within Control Panel or you can just open the start menu and type autoplay in the search box. Autoplay settings allows you to tell your computer how it should behave when a new device is connected to it and I'm wondering if external drives is set to "take no action"
