October is #MeetTheBlindMonth. Due to COVID-19, we cannot go out into the community to share our stories. So we are going to post profiles on some of our members for anyone to read. So, come #MeetTheBlind!

Susie Stanzel joined the NFB of Kansas Johnson-County chapter in August of 1974. Her journey began by being elected to the Vice President position in November of the same year. In August of 1975 she became the President of the chapter when Ken Tiede died at 28 years of age. Susie has been the treasurer of the NFB of Kansas for many years and the State President from 1990 to 2006. After leaving the presidency she became a state board member. Susie has now completed a second term as the chapter President. She was also the treasurer of the NFB computer science division from 1975 to 2016. Susie says that she has gained far more from the federation than she can ever repay. She says lifelong friendships have been formed through the Federation. When her husband Dean died of kidney cancer in 2007 people came from Kansas, Missouri, and Iowa for his memorial service. When Susie had her three children there were many blind mothers to help her learn about techniques for blind parenthood. Susie has attended every Kansas state convention since 1974 and every national convention since 1975. Susie worked for the city of Kansas City, Missouri from 1974 to 1977 and then joined the United States Department of Agriculture. She didn't miss a single day of unpaid work until her retirement in 2015. Susie says she can't imagine life without the National Federation of the Blind.
