Girardo,
The national office of Toastmasters, Inc. is in California, so it is the
same place from which the club members receive their information. You will
have to find out if they now have material on CD, or how it is done as now
people don't use cassettes much.
I was encouraged and treated okay, though I had a harder time in the
advanced level book. You begin with a book of ten lessons and each on a
topic, such as demonstration speech, persuasion speech, etc. Every time you
speak, the members vote on you and the other speeches (maybe 4 per meeting)
and there is a speech winner for the meeting, and someone in the group
follows the evaluation in the manual, writing it and giving it verbally.
Also the club may have everyone write comments on small strips of paper that
you can take and review later. There is always a best speaker and best
evaluator in the meeting. Anyway, in the second level of it I had some
trouble as nonverbal body language was emphasized, and, though my friend
showed me some motions, they looked stiff to others, and people in my club
talked about that. However, we are all different, and clubs are all
different. You can go visit the local group and not join till you get a
picture of what that group is like, and they should be pleased to have you
join.
