[humanser] Emergency Psychiatric sub units

JD,
Actually, I have been on an acute unit for 4.5 years and, yes, the response
was "handle her with kid gloves" when I arrived but, I have silenced many of
the nay-sayers with my handling of compassionate de-escalation and general
grounding unit wide. I do not have a dog and am sometimes questioned by
patients as to the reason for not. I have instituted pet therapy on the unit
and the frequency of the canine question is heightened any Saturday when
dogs are on the unit.
I have not done psychosocial assessments in the ER and would, most probably
not be doing them on the sub-unit. I am responsible for our therapy and
counseling provisions and have been charged with the planning for
stabilization for effective discharge and aftercare engagement for reduction
in recidivism.
I would love to hear more about your inpatient experiences.

Hello Mary:

I have had trouble on acute psychiatric units, especially having a dog guide
in attendance. Although the difficulties were ironed out, the mistrust that
a blind person can protect herself seems the stumbling block for most
managers. Of course this is every worker in an acute unit's responsibility
ty, but they will imagine that we are wide eyed innocents and easy targets
for agressive patients.

Are you looking at a position as an emergency room screener? I think that
would be an exciting job.

Colleagues,

I know that some on this list, JD Townsend and others, have experience in
inpatient settings. I am wondering about any experience in sub settings in
acute stabilization units or other emergency room experiences in mental
health. Might anyone entertain some questions and discussion?
