I always value something a little more when I have to pay something rather
than getting free.

Roanna,
For me, the $5 membership fee is negligible and feels like nothing, relative
to the benefits the Federation affords me. A few examples of the range of
benefits include, fellowship with the widest spectrum of role models
--mothers, fathers, genetic counselors, vendors, mountain climbers,
transcriptionist, attorneys, etc.; legal advocacy for me when I went to
take the licensure exam for my profession and found it was inaccessible and
I was denied any reasonable accommodation; representation when the hospital
that I work for chose electronic record documentation that would not allow
me access to patient records or the manner of documenting;and, some of my
best friends and mentors. I am proud of my membership in the American
Psychological Association, the NAACP, the National Group Psychotherapy
Institute Alumni group and other organizations. Most of those memberships
cost me exponential more and offer me much less. So, for me, it is well
worth what I receive.
It is crucial that each of us feel heard and recognized and I appreciate
your expression and question. I am curious about what, if any, value you
might imagine the NFB bringing to you and your life. If there is none, I
would hope you would allow yourself the opportunity to find something of
value.
I wish you all the best in your exploration.
Genuinely,
Mary Tatum Chappell, Psy. D.

Dear Members,

What benefits will I receive by paying to join the federation? I think blind
people should be able to join the federation without having to pay for it.
I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.
