[humanser] question related to response to Vejas

Hi, Sandra,

I shadowed several music therapists at different sites before starting
my undergrad. We always handled confidentiality by me signing an
agreement. The one facility had me go through volunteer training and
had all volunteers sign statements. The other had me complete a
background check and I also had to agree to confidentiality, though I
didn't kow more than first names at that facility anyway whereas in my
work observing blind kids I had met before I knew more information
about some of them.

As long as you understand HIPPA and can strike an agreement with the
therapist there should not be a problem. The therapist then has the
responsibility to ensure that the clients (or their families if young)
are okay with a student shadowing or sitting in on the session. If
some are not you just leave the room for the session-I don't see why
you wouldn't be able to shadow those who were okay with you being
there. I've never had a parent object to me being in sessions with
their child before to observe. Usually once parents know that you're
looking to become a therapist and continue the work that is helping
their child they're very willing for you to learn from the session as
long as you respect their privacy afterwards. For example, I used a
one-on-one music therapy session I observed back in January as a topic
for a paper I needed to write for one of my music therapy courses. I
noted in the first paragraph that we would refer to the little boy
observed as L instead of his name so that I was respectful of my
agreement and the family. Though my professor also understands
confidentiality and would have been most likely safe to discuss more
details with, I followed the agreement and she completely understood
as she takes confidentiality very seriously.
