[humanser] Challenges with VR services

Erica,

Your insight is helpful. I applied to a local program, the Community Academy. This academy is through Alliant University. The local university is known for its excellent MFT program and studies in psychology. The Community Academy operates an intensive education and training geared toward persons living with a mental health . the program's application implies that some of their funding comes from sources which target minority populations and underserved populations.

The Academy provides a mentor, training and or higher education opportunities related to the area of mental health the applicant wishes to pursue. I want to focus on the geriatric population. In addition to providing mentoring and training there is a requirement to complete a 100-hour internship. I am left with the impression that applicants needing reasonable accommodations are eligible for some funding.

I am in somewhat of a similar situation though my counselor is willing to pay for things. Thankfully she is not putting the onus on me to come up with the entire justification for everything I need. We are working together.

The point stated earlier that you need to get your job focus specific is very good. I've been asked to do the same. I suggest if you are confused about what form/type of social work you specifically want to do, ask to do an internship at a program you think you would enjoy working at. I would not suggest the Salvation Army as that's not a place you could find employment later at. Here in Wisconsin, they are willing to give you a paid three-month internship to get work experience and decide if that area is for you. Depending on the counselor, you can break things up and try several places. This is similar to job shadowing but if you need money this pays you and it has been my experience that the pay is consumerate with your experience and what someone in that Position would be paid.

They will pay for your degree, being more specific about what type of social work you want to do might help. For example, if you live in a market that is saturated with masters degrees, not only that, but it's so in the specific field you want to work in, you are certainly not competitive. So although you might be able to land something entry-level, the likelihood is very

However, they denied me because by pursuing a social work degree, it is expected that I would not be advancing in my career, particularly in terms of salary. I am currently employed, but plan on quitting my job to focus entirely on school work. I shared with them this fact and they said that I would be eligible for VR services if I am unemployed, but I possibly could be asked to show proof that I cannot get a job with my undergraduate degree in psychology. I explained that there are no jobs that I’m aware of where I could work as a social worker without a master’s level degree, to which they responded that I could probably be hired as an entry level employee.
