[humanser] Question about MSW field work and employers

Hi JD and all,
Thanks so much for your responses. My hope is that I will be in a workplace
related to my specialty, if possible. I'll just have to wait and see how
that works out. At the moment, I am rather enjoying the opportunity to
explore various areas of human and social services in my undergrad while
still keeping in mind my long-term goal of welcoming internationals to the
United States. I figure that the more experience I can gain now, the better
prepared I will be in the future.
As far as a previous comment from another list member that my field
supervisor would need his/her MSW, is this a licensing requirement? Or,
would it be possible for my supervisor to have obtained another Masters
degree? I'm just wanting to clarify, so I know how to proceed when
considering job and field placement opportunities and inquiring of my chosen
school. Also, is it practical to continue in my primary place of employment
while simultaneously completing my field work elsewhere? Or, would this be a
conflict of interest or too taxing on my time?
Thanks again for all of your feedback, and have a wonderful weekend!

Best wishes, Miranda

Hello:

It depends on what you need. Your current work place may be good for a
first year's placement, but not so good for a second year where you would be
specializing in clinical work, community organization, administration or
other speciality area.

You would need your agency to agree as someone there would need to be your
supervisor and your school would need to approve the site. Both are usually
pretty easy to obtain.

Good luck!

JD

Subject: [humanser] Question about MSW field work and employers

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all having a good week. As I'm reading about licensing
requirements and my future plans for an MSW, I noticed that it seems to be
most acceptable to complete field work somewhere other than the current
place of employment. However, it was mentioned that it can occasionally be
possible to complete the field work at the place you're already employed. My
question is, who makes this determination? Is it the licensing board? Or, is
it a matter of whether or not the current employer will accept the
candedate's proposal to complete the field work at that location?

Thanks as always for your time and assistance, and have a wonderful week!

Best wishes, Miranda
