[humanser] Question about using assistive technology in the workplace

Gin,
Awesome idea! Os, you do not have to have any financial assistance
to aqire NVDA as it is free. The only thing that your work would have to do
is allow you to use it. I prefer JAWS to NVDA, but if you need a speech
software that is inexpensive and mobile, this is a great resource. You could
also put JAWS on a USB and use it this way if you have a copy. You would
need to experiment with the software to see if it is compatible. You could
also contact Freedom Scientific to determine if they know if the software is
compatible.

Warmly,

I've heard of people having NVDA on a USB stick which they can just plug
into a computer. This is way beyond my technical capacity... but might be
worth asking about as a potential quick solution or stop gap.

you can either go the route big dog recommended, by requesting
accommodations or if your own your own copy of the software then you could
talk to the IT department of the company along with management about you
installing the software on their computer.

Thanks All for the responses. I have a follow-up question regarding the
installation of a screne reader on a company computer. If our case closed
with our VR counselor long ago, who might we talk to about getting
Window-eyes or JAWS in the workplace?

Thanks again,
Osmond

   Hello Osmond,

I use Window-eyes. Several years ago, my employer contracted with an agency
that began using an electronic medical record system that was not
accessible. I worked with the agency, the software developers and the
manufacturers of Window-eyes. After 2.5 years, the system became accessible
only after the agency and software developers implemented the
recommendations of the Window-eyes team. It is my understanding that if Web
Content Accessibility Guidelines that have existed for nearly ten years and
are updated periodically are implemented, many accessibility issues would be
resolved.

Sincerely,
Mary Ann Robinson

Dear All,

I have a question in regards to using assistive tech on the job in a private
organization. The organization uses some kind of electronic health record
system and I know that in past years when I did my clinical internship the
record system did not work at all with Window-Eyes which was the
text-to-speech software on my laptop, but I am writing to ask for those who
are practicing in a clinical context if you have found it easy or difficult
to use JAWS / Window-eyes with your electronic health record system on the
job?

Thanks for your feedback.

Osmond
