Where is the free clinic you work at because the clinic nearest my house requires  volunteers to already have an LCSW?

Hi Everyone,
I met with the behavioral health Director at my local free clinic yesterday, and we had a very positive discussion about me pursuing hours towards my LCSW there. This clinic provides comprehensive and integrative healthcare services to uninsured and underinsured residence of my community. The EHR they use is ECW. Have any of you had experience with this EHR and its compatibility with JAWS?
Thanks so much as always, for your time and assistance, and have a wonderful weekend!

Take care, Miranda

Hi Miranda,

One of the HER's in my job is ECW and unfortunately anything made by that company isn't accessible. ? I wasn't able to do anything with it, so anytime I need anything out of ECW one of my co-workers has to get it for me.

Thank you,

Hi,
Thank you so much for your prompt response. It is frustrating to learn that the system is not accessible. What other accommodations have you put in place with your employer in order to have case notes and other data you collect input into the system?
Thanks again, and have a wonderful weekend!

Take care, Miranda

Hi Miranda,

My teams have limited access to ECW so we only look up info. We input notes in a different system, but that other system isn't accessible, and there is someone that copies my notes from an accessible system to the inaccessible system.
I did present all the inaccessible feedback to the insurance company that my agency contracts with that uses ECW and they took it to the vender of both these inaccessible systems. The feedback we received is the company has no plans to address the inaccessible software. It is extremely frustrating, but at that point there wasn't much more I could do. My company would have to sue the holding agency of the contract, and they would have to sue the vendor is my understanding of the law. My company won't sue, because they'd lose a major contract.

Thank you,

Assuming ECW means EClinicalWorks, I'm surprised that it is so inaccessible. Several years ago, I was asked
to compare a few solutions including EClinicalWorks, and that one came out better than other alternatives
for accessibility. It has been a few years since I've seen it though; and it is of course possible that your
ECW is a different package. My memory by now is faint, but I think I remember noting that EClinicalWorks
looked, for accessibility, like a work in progress but that I thought it looked like it would also get
better. I could be wrong on this memory, as many analyses of software as I've done since.

Hello Miranda,

That sounds like a very good place to work.  I hope you get in.

Computer- based software is a roadblock for me and many other health
professionals who cannot access agency electronic records.  I have had
access engineers provided through my state's blind services who can,
usually, create JAWS overlays that will make your documents fully or mostly
accessible.  I have been in situations where nothing worked, in those
situations I made templates that approximated those on the electronic
records, printed them out and asked support staff to send scanned or
electronic versions into client records.

When we find roadblocks we need to invent ways around them.

Best of luck on this,
JD

Hi JD,
Thank you so much for your response. Unfortunately, my case with VR is closed, because I am successfully employed. I definitely agree with creating external templates as an alternative solution, and will propose this as an accommodation.

Hi Doug,
Thank you so much for sharing your insight. From what I saw online, it looks like this may be the same system, but, like you mentioned, it very well may have been updated, and thus may be less accessible than before. I am definitely curious to see if IT from the clinic is able to permit me to access a sandbox so I can explore the system as well.
