[HumanSer] HumanSer Digest, Vol 224, Issue 1

Michael,

I know you live in VA near me unless you moved. Come back to the Fairfax chapter!

Are you seeking employment or volunteer placement now? Just curious. Last time you said you were trying to secure accomodations for some sort of test required in VA.
I'm on here to see what professionals do or how people got started at their work. I'd like to work with people probably as an activity facilitator.
I'm also interested in working as an assistant in an office to either a coordinator or case manager. When I applied to human service entry level jobs in my county, I also encountered access barriers. I was sometimes interviewed but the staff did not think their software was accessible. I got the feeling they did not want to take a chance on me only for the job not to work out. I used to have a case with VR, but they were of little help securing employment after I graduated with a BA degree.

Good luck finding a placement, Michael!
That is a good question for Miranda. But maybe she can tell you off list where she works.

Miranda, I use Jaws as a screen reader also. I have low vision but primarily use the assistive technology.
So, Miranda, I know the barriers and frustration of inaccessible electronic records software or databases.
I hope it works out for you.
Maybe you can create a template and fill it out and have someone copy it in to the official database.

I was a volunteer years ago before the pandemic at a human service nonprofit.
It was The Women's Center.
My goal was to gain experience working with people, practice my communication skills on the phone, and just help out in a nonprofit.
My duties were to answer the phones, transfer calls to the appropriate department or person, and also refer people to resources. I was an information and referral
Specialist.
I also had to listen a lot to find out what they needed or suggest the right resource either at Womens center or another place.
I was able to find the resources by using the electronic files they gave me and using the Jaws find command to quickly locate the right material.

My position as an information and referral specialist was going well until they started using some sort of electronic sheet. I think it was in some sort of database. Maybe Microsoft Access.
Until then, I simply wrote down my calls and what action I took either by hand or in a Word file.
But, the sheet they created was not accessible since Jaws would not read the field names as I tabbed through them.
So, I had no idea what to fill in since Jaws simply said "edit".

Then they stopped me from coming by saying that they wanted to find something else to use my skills better. We discussed that something which was writing stories to promote the organization. It never happened because then they said they did not have time to start that project with me.

Anyways, I wish you success Michael, if you still need a placement. Homeless shelters let you do some work without a license, the LCSW. So you might try there. Just a thought.

Ashley

Where is the free clinic you work at because the clinic nearest my house requires volunteers to already have an LCSW?

Hi Everyone,
I met with the behavioral health Director at my local free clinic yesterday, and we had a very positive discussion about me pursuing hours towards my LCSW there. This clinic provides comprehensive and integrative healthcare services to uninsured and underinsured residence of my community. The EHR they use is ECW. Have any of you had experience with this EHR and its compatibility with JAWS?
Thanks so much as always, for your time and assistance, and have a wonderful weekend!

Take care, Miranda

Hi Miranda,

One of the HER's in my job is ECW and unfortunately anything made by that company isn't accessible. ? I wasn't able to do anything with it, so anytime I need anything out of ECW one of my co-workers has to get it for me.

Thank you,

Hi,
Thank you so much for your prompt response. It is frustrating to learn that the system is not accessible. What other accommodations have you put in place with your employer in order to have case notes and other data you collect input into the system?
Thanks again, and have a wonderful weekend!

Take care, Miranda

Hi Miranda,

My teams have limited access to ECW so we only look up info. We input notes in a different system, but that other system isn't accessible, and there is someone that copies my notes from an accessible system to the inaccessible system.
I did present all the inaccessible feedback to the insurance company that my agency contracts with that uses ECW and they took it to the vender of both these inaccessible systems. The feedback we received is the company has no plans to address the inaccessible software. It is extremely frustrating, but at that point there wasn't much more I could do. My company would have to sue the holding agency of the contract, and they would have to sue the vendor is my understanding of the law. My company won't sue, because they'd lose a major contract.

Thank you,

Assuming ECW means EClinicalWorks, I'm surprised that it is so inaccessible. Several years ago, I was asked to compare a few solutions including EClinicalWorks, and that one came out better than other alternatives for accessibility. It has been a few years since I've seen it though; and it is of course possible that your ECW is a different package. My memory by now is faint, but I think I remember noting that EClinicalWorks looked, for accessibility, like a work in progress but that I thought it looked like it would also get better. I could be wrong on this memory, as many analyses of software as I've done since.

Hello Miranda,

That sounds like a very good place to work. I hope you get in.

Computer- based software is a roadblock for me and many other health
professionals who cannot access agency electronic records. I have had
access engineers provided through my state's blind services who can,
usually, create JAWS overlays that will make your documents fully or mostly
accessible. I have been in situations where nothing worked, in those
situations I made templates that approximated those on the electronic
records, printed them out and asked support staff to send scanned or
electronic versions into client records.

When we find roadblocks we need to invent ways around them.

Best of luck on this,
JD

Hi JD,
Thank you so much for your response. Unfortunately, my case with VR is closed, because I am successfully employed. I definitely agree with creating external templates as an alternative solution, and will propose this as an accommodation.

Hi Doug,
Thank you so much for sharing your insight. From what I saw online, it looks like this may be the same system, but, like you mentioned, it very well may have been updated, and thus may be less accessible than before. I am definitely curious to see if IT from the clinic is able to permit me to access a sandbox so I can explore the system as well.
