That is much more encouraging !!
I will likely be in touch once we start rolling out this new system - which actually is now until about November.

Hi all, sorry I'm late to this discussion. I am using epic as my EMR. I
work as a genetic counselor at Stanford Childrens Hospital in the fertility
department. I have used epic over many years and over time, it has actually
gotten better. That's not to say it's easy, but that it's gotten better.
Most of the screens are treated as a webpage which helps JAWS read it. I do
not have any vision at all and I use JAWS for everything. Every hospital
sets up their epic build slightly differently but there are many things in
common. The good thing about epic is that there is not just one way to
accomplish a task. Often times I do extra keystrokes or access a feature
differently from sighted folks but I still get the job done. I document in
charts, review charts, put in orders, etc. It's hard to give specific tips
but I'd be happy to talk by phone to anyone interested in learning more. I
did use JAWS scripting at the very beginning but have not used that in
several years. It is helpful to have a sighted person who knows your
specific build sit with you to help you learn where things are on the
screen or buttons that you need to find. At the beginning, using the find
command can really help especially when screens are very busy and
cluttered. There are also changes you can make to hide certain parts of the
screen that you don't need.
Hope this helps.

I have not tinkered with speech-to-text solutions much, but I can give a
generic answer:
If something cannot be accomplished via the keyboard, but can via a voice
command, that may be a gain; but
it would still be necessary, in most cases, to be able to read the results
with a screen reader I would
think. When evaluating a new workflow, make sure everything needed from
start to finish can be found
somehow.

Thanks for this informtion... although its a bit disappointing..
I need to be able to invert the video and make the fonts a bit larger and
would be happier if I could make it talk to supplement my low vision..
Erika - it sounds like your husband has low vision.
Doug - I might be contacting you again !!
They have delivered nuance handsets (Dragon Dictate) to everyone so they
can do speech to text. I recall a few years ago with a Cerner EMR product
that there was some capacity with Nuance to do text to speech and some
voice commands. I wonder if that adds some hopefulness to this situation.
Doug - Any thoughts about that??

I am sorry to hear this and a bit surprised that it is that bad, though by
now my memory of the specific
issues I saw is faint.
I would welcome more information and/or a chance to help figure out if
anything can be improved for him. I
do small jobs without a contract, and sometimes a small job can make a big
difference. But I also understand
that there is a high likelihood of his environment being too restrictive
to let me examine it without a lot
of paperwork. Still, if there's anything I can do, feel free to let me
know.

Years ago I scripted Epic for JAWS for a contract client. At the time
though, I was working for a company;
now I am an independent contractor. Back then at least, Epic was
web-based, at least in the sense of being
mostly composed of HTML pages though some had custom controls on them as
well. They also provided some JAWS
support files directly; and I can only hope that this support has improved
in the years since I was involved.

Excellent news. I have been interested in EMDR but have hesitated taking
the training due to the cost weighed against possible access issues.
Having referred clients to EMDR and it’s offshoots, I find the process
intriguing.

Good Morning Jimmy,
So good to hear from you. I am so interested in the information regarding
this email. Can you share some information with me regarding using EMDR as
a blind professional? I would greatly appreciate it. I heard you are
going to be at the state convention. I hope to see you there. Any
information you can provide me will be extremely helpful: training,
accessibility, etc. Thank you,and best wishes.

Good day.
For those who use EMDR equipment or are looking for an accessible unit.
EMDRkits.com have a comprehensive and accessible app that works with the
lighter and pulsators. IN the past year, there were some issues of buttons
that were no longer labeled, such as the various light colors to change on
the light bar, to name a few. I checked in with the company and they are
releasing an update within the next few weeks that will address all of the
issues that I have presented them. It is always exciting when we can
promote change. I hope you are all doing well!
