> Also, for our October 26th meeting, we will be focusing on the education rights of incarcerated youth. Rachel Brady, a Skadden Fellow and attorney in EFE’s Special Education Clinic will be the presenter. Here is a description of that session: Youth with disabilities who are in prison in Illinois have the same educational rights as students who are in public schools in the community. For years the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice, which operates its own school district inside each of the five youth prisons in Illinois, has not been providing appropriate educational services for youth with disabilities. And when youth are released from prison, their home school districts often discourage them from enrolling. This deprivation of education leads fuels the revolving door that ensures these youth stay involved in the juvenile justice system. This presentation will focus on the law surrounding, educational issues facing, and remedies for, youth with disabilities who are in Illinois’s youth prisons, or who are transitioning back to their communities after being released from prison.
