Robert,

The $15 DSL service is through AT&T.

Hina and Robert,

The computer I got for $85 was from Chicago Surplus Computer, which is
located near Belmont and Cicero at 3053 N. Knox Ave. in Chicago. The
telephone number is 773-545-7357. It is not really a store where you
can do in person shopping. They want folks to call before picking up a
computer. I found them on Craig’s List. Give the guys there a call and
tell them specifically about the kind of computer you want. I was
crystal clear that I wanted a non-Dell Windows desktop for under $100
that had room for a second hard drive, a DVD burner, PCI card slots
and USB ports and a Pentium 4 processor or better. I ended up with a
solid desktop that works great on all of today’s software. It comes
with a 30-day hardware warrantee, in the event it stops working
shortly after you get it home. You must pick up your computer in
person during regular business hours Monday-Friday and they strongly
encourage payment in cash.

They don’t do handholding and help people figure out their computer
needs. The guys take large lots of computers off people’s hands, such
as companies, schools or government agencies, and prepare them for
reuse. The computer hardware is checked and the hard drives are wiped
clean and a fresh version of Windows is installed. The drivers are
also installed for the particular computer model. Those that don’t
make the grade are stripped of useful parts, which may be added to
other computers or just sold separately. Those computers and parts
that can’t be sold for reuse are recycled in an environmentally
responsible way.

When I brought the computer home and connected it to the Internet
through the Ethernet port, the computer downloaded new Windows updates
for an hour and then took about 30 to 45 minutes to install these
updates. This needed to be done with a sighted person, as windows
should be fully updated before a screen reader is installed. The
update process is pretty self-explanatory so most sighted people who
are careful could help. The computers do not come with anti-virus or
spyware programs, so the end user needs to install these themselves,
like most computers these days.
