[il-talk] First aid and CPR

Hi Andrew. Yeah, it's no problem for a blind person to do the CPR part, as
a lot of it is done by feel anyway. I did the same one-on-one work under
the instructor's supervision and learned a lot.

Thanks Rob. Yes, like Shelley I worked directly with the mannequin, and in
fact I think this is pretty standard in CPR certification classes. I was
also able to review the training manuals in electronic form prior to the
class. Between reading preparation, listening to the instruction in class,
and practicing on the mannequin under the instructor's supervision, I
learned what I think I needed to, and there's no question that a blind
person can learn to use proper CPR technique by reference to anatomical
points that require no vision to locate.

The defibrillator (AED) is a separate matter, and can be used in tandem with
CPR in order to boost the victim's chances of survival. However, I was
chagrined to find the AED apparently inaccessible to blind user, and I was
just wondering if anyone knew differently. What a pity that blindness could
preclude use of a potentially life-saving device such as this.

Regards,
Andrew

FYI: I spoke with my friend, Shelley who lives in Orange County CA. She told
me that when she took the CPR class, she worked one-on-one with the madikin.

She said that there was no mannnual from the Redcross.

Hi all,

I mentioned earlier in the week that I'd be attending a CPR certification
class. I did so, and it was a good experience. This won't come as news to
many of you, but it was good to get the reassurance that CPR can be
performed just as capably by first responders who are blind as it can by
anyone else. However, this class also provided my first hands-on
introduction to the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). This
device seems invaluable, and yet from my experience also seems quite
inaccessible to the blind, i.e., vision seems necessary to properly place
the pads on the victim, and I found no apparent workaround. I haven't found
any resources online that indicate to the contrary. Does anyone have any
insights or knowledge on this? It would seem to be a wonderful thing if
blind people could themselves operate AEDs, which when properly utilized can
boost chances of survival dramatically.

Regards,

Andrew
