Join Julie and Mindy On Friday September 26, at 8:00 PM Eastern in the All About Learning Room, where they will present a training session on the use of the TCConference app which is the interface between our chat rooms and the iDevice like the iPhone, iPad or Mac computer. Some site members have had some problems in finding, entering, or talking in the rooms. Although Mindy and Julie are the first to say that they may not have all the answers, they have some familiarity with using the app with limited success in chat rooms.

Next will be a 30 minute segment from the wwdc September 9th presentation about the iPhone6 new models and features. Julie will then impart information on some accessibility features contained in IOS8. If time permits, there will also be a ten minute podcast about accessibility bugs not yet addressed in IOS8 just released (with a patch coming soon we hope).

We will also have other tidbits of information along with our usual discussion and Q and A. So come one come all to learn from and to teach each other.

The TCConference app

The app is called TCConference and can be obtained for free from the app store. Download and install the app, however do not open the app because it is self launching. It activates when you launch a safari page or enter a chat room. If you go into a room, you should hear a prompt asking for TCConference to control your microphone. If you do not hear the prompt for the app to take control of your microphone, you can go in to settings, go to privacy, then to microphones then to TCConference and turn on microphone. Then double tap the back button and go out of Settings, and close settings in app switcher.

When you are in a room you will first come to two name and password edit boxes which are filled in with your information and can be bypassed. Then click the done button in the lower right corner of the screen then click the connect button and it will say webpage loaded. Then go to the #3 chat voice tab and double tap. There is a talk button and mute button. The talk button is a toggle between talk and stop which allows you to talk and releases the key for another person to speak. When you double tap the talk button initially, you will hear a chirping sound letting you know that you have the “talk key” and are talking. When you finish speaking, you wait a couple of seconds and double tap the talk key to release the microphone.

There are also areas to type in text messages. There is a slight delay when listening to the ends of others sentences. Otherwise the portability of the app is helpful for some people wishing to use a smaller iDevice or Mac computer to access a chat room on a Talking Communities website. For optimum performance, a windows based computer is the most stable way to access the site. Another difficulty with the TCConference app is that if you are a moderator in a TC Chat room, moderator tools are not available if you use an iPhone. A person using a Mac however will note that they have moderator status, but will have limited functionality to use the Moderator Tools. You can access our rooms with an iDevice or mobile device if you choose, although the functionality is more limited and less stable than interacting with a windows based PC, it is an option available to you. If you are having difficulty with using the TCConference app with your iDevice and need any assistance, one on one, please contact either Julie or Mindy. They will be happy to assist you.

Have a great day.
