Dear Fellow Federationists,
Door Prize Committee Chairperson Marylou Grunwald has asked that I write
this list regarding our upcoming State Convention, and our important and
fun tradition of awarding door prizes. Our convention is only two months
from now.
Of course we can't award door prizes if we don't have any, which is
where things stand now. We are therefore asking committee members, board
members, and anyone else wishing to enhance the festive atmosphere of
this convention to bring door prizes. This is also a fun way for
chapters, divisions, or committees to seek recognition.
There are generally two ways to get door prizes -- to buy then or to
have someone else donate them. While the former may seem easier, the
latter is free and probably a lot easier than you imagine. People who
know you and are helped to understand the NFB's role in enhancing the
independence and confidence of blind people are happy to be a part of
our convention through their donation, purchasing a little good will in
the process. I have attached a letter from President Avant that may be
helpful in soliciting.
What types of door prizes should be solicited?
Door prizes should have an estimated value of at least $25, and should
be small enough for winners to transport home. Cash is always a
favorite, but others have donated gift certificates, candy or similar
food, hand-made items such as scarves, etc. Since children are eligible
to win, alcoholic beverages aren't good.
Finally: it is very helpful if the door prize envelope or package can be
labeled in print and in Braille. This will make it possible for whoever
announces the prizes to do so.
If you have further questions, please contact Marylou Grunwald at
mgrunwald at sbcglobal.net, or via phone at @773-671-1663.
Cordially,
Bill Reif
