Learning braille helps blind children become confident and independent, and enables them to reach their goals and follow their dreams.

                              Dear Linda,
Learning braille helps blind children become confident and independent, and enables them to reach their goals and follow their dreams.

One of our readers, Donald, lost his vision at age 17, when he was hit by the propeller from a model airplane. Becoming blind so close to the end of high school was difficult for Donald—he was at first reluctant to learn braille, and his education stalled while he struggled to find a new path in life after abandoning his goal of joining the Army Air Corps. But he missed reading too much not to try, and, six months after his accident, a braille tutor with a copy of Reader’s Digest got him started on the path to literacy.
Years later, Donald learned of National Braille Press through our Children’s Braille Book Club, while in search of print/braille books that he could read to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The accessible format allows his whole family to enjoy story time together.
Braille enabled Donald to fulfill his potential and enjoy life as an independent blind adult, and today I’m asking for your help to make sure that all blind children get that chance. By supporting National Braille Press, you’ll help fund our programs and ensure that we can continue producing quality, affordable braille products, ensuring literacy and autonomy for blind children and adults.
