[il-talk] Primary Voting today

My first electronic voting experience was in 2006, when the machines
were first introduced. I voted before work, shortly after the polls
opened at6:00. Election judges could not start the audio ballot. The
Chicago board of Elections told the poll workers that a technician
would be sent. I could not wait and said I would return after work to
vote with a functioning machine. I wrote a detailed account of my
experience and sent it to the Chicago Tribune who published it on
their home page. It gained nationwide attention and of course the
audio at the polling place in my precinct was working when I went to
vote.

Today, I voted using the audio ballot at my polling place with no
issues. The trouble in Chicago and Cook County is that the audio
ballot needs to be selected when the voter card is created for the
voter. Sometimes the poll workers are not aware that the voter card
needs to be created differently. My suggestion for everyone voting at
their local precinct for the first time with an audio ballot is to
arrive soon after the polls open and if the audio ballot is not
functional, insist like Denise did for a technician to be sent from
the central office who can repair the machine, retrain the poll
workers, or bring a new machine so someone can vote accessibly.
Complaining does not bring change for the next election.
