This job involves assessing individual needs for
assistive technology along with providing
installation and training on all types of assistive
technology. There will be a major focus on
computers with specialized software and other types
of low vision equipment. The consumers served will
be individuals of all ages who are primarily Blind or
have Low Vision in southeastern South Dakota.
Occasional overnight travel is expected. A degree in
computer related sciences along with experience is
required, however, field experience with Low Vision
AT may be substituted. A desire to work with
individuals with disabilities is required. Starting
Salary : $35,000 with full benefits.

Assistive Technology Low Vision Specialist Job Description

Job Summary:
This job involves assessing individual needs for assistive technology along with providing installation and
training on all types of assistive technology. There will be a major focus on computers with specialized
software and other types of low vision equipment. The consumers served will be individuals of all ages who
are primarily Blind or have Low Vision in southeastern South Dakota. Occasional overnight travel is expected.
A degree in computer related sciences along with experience is required, however, field experience with Low Vision AT may be substituted. A desire to work with individuals with disabilities is required.

Responsibilities and Duties:
The Assistive Technology Specialist will meet with Consumers primarily at their location to assess their need
for assistive technology that could be used at school, work or at home. This requires significant driving to their
location primarily in Southeastern South Dakota In most cases equipment must be brought into the
consumer’s location for evaluation. The equipment will be for all disabilities and can include computers,
specialized software, ergonomic workstation equipment including chairs and electronic video magnifiers.
Once the equipment is identified the Specialist will write a report identifying the needs including cost
estimates. After the assessment is approved the Specialist will deliver the identified equipment and provide
installation along with training on the use of the identified equipment. The Specialist will also provide services
to maintain, upgrade and repair all types of assistive technology we have installed or have been provided by
others.


Qualifications and Skills
· Proven experience as computer technician, relevant certifications or a similar role related to the duties
of this position
· Above average mechanical aptitude
· Excellent troubleshooting skills
· Very good communication abilities
· Exceptional organizing and time-management skills
· Occasionally moves equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
· South Dakota driver’s license
· Certification as a Rehabilitation Technician within 5 years of hire
· Successfully pass a criminal background check
