I was never able to get thunder-bird to work on my computer.  I've
used the web interface of g-mail for years with no problems.  I highly
recommend google chrome as a web browser.  I recently began to use
this browser and really like it because how fast it is compared to
fire-fox which I've been using for years.  Internet explorer isn't
even being supported any more and I haven't used it in several years
and haven't really missed it at all.  Good luck.
