      What is Lawrence OnBoard?  It's the nation's first community supported transportation network built out of the empty seats in our cars.  Lawrence OnBoard looks a little like hitchhiking, but it employs safety features, directional signalling, driver incentives and organizational support.  

Lawrence OnBoard is based on a club membership system.   Members can sign up as riders or drivers or both.  All participants will be registered and issued a photo ID.  Riders receive a white board with the club logo.  Riders can go to any safe road side, write their destination on the white board, and catch a ride with any willing driver.

The rider then sends a text message to the Lawrence OnBoard office with the member number of the driver.  There is a record of the ride for safety, for leaving feedback and for entering drivers in a drawing for prizes. The club will provide training to riders and drivers.      How's it going so far?  Lawrence OnBoard is currently in research and development.  We have logged 50 test rides, collected data, handed out surveys and taken interviews.  Twenty riders have tried it out so far and it seems to be working pretty well.      What next?  We would like to round out the research by collecting data on 100 more rides by the end of the summer.   In the meanwhile, we will be presenting this project to as many people as possible.  The more folks who know about it, the easier it will be for riders to get picked up.
