Holman Prize Applications Open January 20

While this is not totally related to employment, the $25,000 individual
project grants it provides to three blind people could enable one or more
of you to pursue a professional or personal project of your dreams.

Are you a person who is blind or has low vision between the ages of 16 and

place at our Enchanted Hills Camp in Napa, California but we will continue

and we are prepared to do it again.

Now, here’s a bit more about both programs:

*Youth Employment Services (YES) Summer Academy*

who are blind or have low vision between the ages of 16 and 24. Students
will have an unforgettable summer filled with engaging and valuable
pre-employment learning opportunities as they participate in independent
living skills trainings, employment readiness seminars, paid work-based
experiences, mentoring conversations, and memorable social activities all
wile connecting with life-long friends and mentors and supportive
LightHouse staff.

*Enchanted Hills Camp Leadership and Counselor in Training Program*

The Enchanted Hills Camp (EHC) Leadership and Counselor-in-Training Program
(CIT) focuses on developing leaders who are blind or have low vision
between the ages of 16 and 18. CITs will learn how to create a great
experience for campers while developing their own leadership skills,
including soft skills, job exploration and conflict resolution. Training
takes place through discussion, observation and practice under the
supervision of Enchanted Hills Camp and LightHouse staff.

Successful participants in either program will develop a strong work ethic
and leadership skills that can be applied in their post-secondary education

*By Elora, LightHouse student and Legacy Society member*

I’ve been a part of the blind and visually impaired community throughout my
life, through my mother, who was a Teacher of the Visually Impaired, as
well as family, friends and volunteer work. I’ve long known of the positive
impact that organizations like LightHouse have on people’s lives. A couple
of years ago, I became involved in the community in a new way, as a
visually impaired person. I came to LightHouse for help and gained
firsthand knowledge of the life-changing services LightHouse offers. Vision
changes can be devastating. LightHouse provided me with the services I
needed to get my life back.

The skills training and peer support at LightHouse were great. Yet one
thing bothered me: there is sometimes a waitlist for services. Nothing is
more frustrating than to get to the point where you’re ready to move
forward, and then have to wait.

I’ve always believed in giving where your heart is and where you see the
greatest need. So, when I was planning my estate, I thought of other
visually impaired or blind people who may be waiting to start training at
LightHouse. Working with an estate attorney and a financial advisor, I
structured a gift to LightHouse for after I am gone, a gift that will help
LightHouse serve the blind and visually impaired community well into the
future. My mission for LightHouse is more people served and fewer waiting
for services. I’m working toward this mission through my planned gift.
Planning a gift creates possibilities, not just for LightHouse, but also
for those people who are waiting to get their lives back.

Our next workshop is Wednesday, February 17, 2021. Want to learn how you
can plan your estate and what the benefits of becoming a member of the
LightHouse Legacy Society are?

Join us for our next Estate Planning Workshop via Zoom on Wednesday,
February 17, 2021 at 5:30 pm. Our special guest, estate planning attorney
David Yu, will present and will answer your questions. Jerry Kuns, longtime
donor to the LightHouse, will tell us why he joined the LightHouse Legacy
Society. For more info or to RSVP contact 415-694-7311 or
events at lighthouse-sf.org.

If you would like to learn more about planning a gift and joining the
LightHouse Legacy society, contact Jennifer Sachs, Director of Development,
at 415-694-7333 or JSachs at lighthouse-sf.org, or contact your financial
advisor.

Are you ready to celebrate the first day of the new year? Lunar New Year
that is.

Lunar New Year is the beginning of a calendar year where the months are
cycles of the moon and is celebrated in many East and South Asian
countries. In San Francisco, where LightHouse is headquartered, Lunar New
Year has been celebrated by the Chinese American community since the 1860s.
There are twelve Chinese Zodiac signs, each one being an animal. Each lunar
year is assigned an animal in a repeating twelve-year cycle. This Lunar New
Year, which falls on February 12 on the Gregorian calendar, is the Year of
the Ox. The ox symbolizes attributes such as confidence and determination.

This year, our Adaptations Store
<https://lighthouse-sf.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f40e17a83bbae60b5969a0798&id=9e59e2a113&e=d4dd5f649a>
is selling a Lunar New year tactile greeting card, designed in-house
by our Media
and Accessible Design Lab

On the front is a Red Paper Lantern with red tassels, emblazoned in gold
with the Chinese character “fu” (meaning good fortune). The card reads
"Happy New Year" on the front, and "Wishing you happiness and good fortune"
on the inside. The card is 5.5 by 8.5 inches and comes with an envelope.

By Sheri Albers, Community Outreach Coordinator

Pull up a comfy chair and join me in a virtual living room to talk about
all things LightHouse. This monthly event was created for people who have
been experiencing changes in their vision and have noticed that this has
begun to affect their daily life. I know from experience that it is not
necessary to live with the stress and fear of not having the right tools. I
wish that I had known about LightHouse when I was growing up to prepare me
for my later years without vision. This is a safe and welcoming place to
come and ask the questions you need answers to. I’ll share with you the
great things that LightHouse has to offer that will help you become more
independent, confident, and self-reliant.

Each month we also focus on a different program to let you know what is new
and exciting at LightHouse. For the January event, our guest will be Kate
Williams, LightHouse Director of Employment Services, which is now being
offered nationally via Zoom. Come talk to Kate about what her team has been
doing to assist people who are blind or have low vision to join the
workforce. Our Employment team provides a thorough assessment of the needs
of each individual as they enter the program. Employment Specialists guide
students through complex topics such as creating a dynamic resume, writing
compelling cover letters, preparing for interviews, disclosing their
disability and requesting accommodations. Students work individually to
master these skills while they build a network.

We’ll also be joined by Raqi Gomez, manager of our Adaptations Store
<https://lighthouse-sf.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f40e17a83bbae60b5969a0798&id=ab37b6aaf6&e=d4dd5f649a>.
She’ll let us know about the latest and greatest in blindness and low
vision products on the market.

Meet You at the House takes place Wednesday, January 27 from 2:00 to 3:00
pm. You can RSVP to me at SAlbers at lighthouse-sf.org or call 415-694-7331.

I can’t wait to talk to you.
