Oh, I forgot to mention when you put together the reference sheet that you should probably list a heading at the top that says "References" or something equally good.

As to the number of references, regardless of whether you use a sheet or put them on the resume directly, you will want to have at least 2 "professional" references and , and you will want to have a total of 3-5 references total. Professional references are people like former supervisors at volunteer activities or jobs, co-workers who can vouch for your ability to do the job, anyone who you trained - if relevant or applicable - etc., etc. Basically anyone who knows your abilities and can vouch for you in a work-related setting.

Finally, I cannot echo enough Jennifer's advice about approaching potential references *BEFORE* you put htem down on anything for a job you want to apply to; you will avoid a lot of potential awkwardness at best if you do this.

Okay, now I have to disagree with my friend Jennifer Wenzel. I recommend you put three to five references on your resume. Use name, relationship to you or job title snd employer, email, and phone number. Or you can attach a separate resume sheet. That is because some employers like to check references before they interview people. Including references gives you a leg up with them. But her advice isn’t necessarily wrong, just different. Welcome to diversity of opinion!
