Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited American Library Association college or university with a Master's degree in Library Science or an approved foreign credential evaluation supplemented by one year of professional library experience.
Duties: The Assistive Resources Center of the Chicago Public Library provides services and resources that helps eliminate barriers for individuals with disabilities, limited English proficiency persons, senior adults and Chicagoans experiencing print disabilities. Under the supervision of the department manager, the duties of this position includes the following. Assists library patrons in using facility resources (e.g., catalog of library materials, indexes, reference materials, assistive technology and equipment, and access to the Illinois State Library's Talking Book and Braille Service and other digital library materials). Conducts research on bibliographic data using library databases and the Internet. Provides public service by phone, email, and in person. Assists with reference, referral, and readers' advisory services for patrons. Assists in planning, developing and administering library programs, events and services that engages the public (e.g., adult book discussions, library orientation, Assistive Resources Center tours, bibliographic instruction). Assists in seeking outside support for library programs. Participates in collection development responsibilities by preparing reading lists, bibliographies, and annotations for library collections. Responds to questions and requests for information regarding library collections. Oversees library collections and makes recommendations for the acquisition of new materials and collections .Promotes library programs, services and exhibits (e.g., designing flyers or displays,) by visiting area schools, community organizations, senior centers, community colleges, agencies and service providers of people with disabilities. Assists in developing, coordinating and maintaining outreach initiatives with colleagues, libraries, non-profits, schools, agencies and service providers of people with disabilities, including presenting and exhibiting at meetings, conferences and events .Compiles and maintains records and reports of library activities and inventories. Processes interlibrary loans, reserves and holds. Supervises the work of paraprofessional and clerical staff. Serves as the person in charge of the department in the absence of the manager. Performs related duties as assigned.
